Around 50 cars have been marked with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Cars, walls and postal boxes were vandalized, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they announced in a statement.
Police report they were notified late on Wednesday, when a resident discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored liquid.
The fluid had been placed in the form of a swastika, they stated.
Law enforcement then located many other vandalized cars and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws banning the public display of Nazi symbols.
Officials state initial examinations suggest the fluid was likely human blood.
"There is still no clue as to where it came from; investigators are currently not informed of any injuries in connection with the event," they stated.
Municipal representatives stated they were working "to unravel the case" and have appealed to the public for information.
A high-ranking political figure commented the incident made him stunned and required to be resolved promptly.
"This act hits the center of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the extremist violent incident half a decade ago," he wrote on social media, mentioning the killing of nine people by a gunman focusing on residents of migrant background in 2020.
